Инверсия после отрицательных наречий (Hardly/No sooner …)

Hardly / Scarcely / No sooner / Never / Rarely / Little / Not until / Under no circumstances / Only …

Инверсия = перестановка вспомогательного/модального глагола перед подлежащим: Aux/Modal + Subject + Verb …

Когда нужна инверсия

Инверсия обязательна, если в начале предложения стоит:

• Отрицательное/квазиотрицательное наречие/обороты: never, rarely, seldom, hardly, scarcely, no sooner, little, nowhere, not once, at no time under no circumstances, on no account, in no way not until… / not since… / only after… / only when… / only then… / only by…
• Координатор neither / nor (в добавочной реплике): I don’t like it. Neither do I.

Регистр: формально-книжный/публицистический. В устной речи встречается реже.

Общая формула

• Be/Modal есть → просто переносим его: Never have I seen… / Under no circumstances should you…
• В Simple без Aux → используем do-support: Never did I doubt it.
• Пунктуация: после вынесенного оборота обычно ставится запятая, если это длинная вводная рамка (Not until…, Only after…). У Hardly/No sooner запятая не нужна внутри первой клаузы; союз стоит между частями.

Классические пары последовательности

A) Hardly/Scarcely … when …

• Шаблон: Hardly/Scarcely + had + S + V3 + when + Past Simple …
• Значение: «Едва … как …» (почти сразу после).
• Примеры: Hardly had we sat down when the lights went out. Scarcely had she finished when the phone rang.

B) No sooner … than …

• Шаблон: No sooner + had + S + V3 + than + Past Simple …
• Примеры: No sooner had the show started than the fire alarm went off.

Внимание к союзам: Hardly/Scarcely → when, No sooner → than (не смешивать!).

Частотность/опыт (настоящее/прошлое)

• Never / Rarely / Seldom + инверсия: Never have I felt so proud. Rarely do we see such talent. (Present Simple → do)

«Мало/совсем не знал» — Little

• Значение: «совсем не / почти не». Little did he know that… (в Simple → did)

Запрет/условие

• Under no circumstances / On no account / In no way Under no circumstances should you share the password.

Рамка времени/условия: Not until / Only …

• Начальная рамка + инверсия в главной: Not until I read the report did I realize the risk. Only after we had tested it did we release the update. Only then did I understand. Only by working together can we succeed.

Усиление с so / such

(тоже вызывает инверсию при фронтировании прилагательного/наречного):

• So great was the crowd that…
• Such was the noise that… (формально; полезно для академического стиля)

Neither / Nor (добавление отрицания)

• Отзеркаливание к предыдущему отрицанию: I can’t swim. Neither can I. / She doesn’t like coffee; nor does she drink tea.

Частые ошибки (и как не допустить)

1. Неправильный союз: No sooner … when → than ; Hardly … than → when .
2. Время у Hardly/No sooner: в первой части чаще Past Perfect, во второй Past Simple (порядок событий).
3. Отсутствие do-support в Simple: Never I doubted → Never did I doubt…
4. Двойное отрицание по смыслу: Little he didn’t know → Little did he know…
5. Инверсия не там: инвертируется главная часть после начальной рамки Not until / Only ….
