Глагол + предлог (verb–preposition): depend on, insist on, arrive at/in, look for
Коллокации «глагол + предлог» нужно запоминать как единое целое: смысл часто меняется от выбора предлога.
depend on/upon — «зависеть от»
- Форма: depend on + N / V-ing / wh-clause
Success depends on teamwork.
It depends on getting enough data.
It depends on how we measure it.
- upon — более формально/книжно: depend upon (в тестах допустимо).
- Частые связки: depend heavily on, depend largely on.
- Ошибки:
- depend of/from → depend on.
- После depend on действие как правило в V-ing:
depends on to get data → depends on getting data.
insist on — «настаивать на»
- Настаивать на действии/факте: insist on + N / V-ing
She insisted on a refund. / He insisted on seeing the manager.
- Придаточное «что…»: insist (that) + clause (часто с (should) в BrE):
They insisted that he (should) apologize.
- Регистры: insist on + V-ing — очень частая экзаменационная ловушка (не «to do»!).
- Ошибки:
- insist to do → insist on doing
- В пассиве: It was insisted that… / They insisted on being seated together.
arrive in / arrive at — «прибывать в»
- Правило размера/типа места:
- arrive in + город/страна/крупная территория:
arrive in Bishkek / in France / in the city
- arrive at + точка/объект (здание, станция, событие):
arrive at the airport / at the station / at the hotel / at work / at the party
- Без предлога с home: arrive home (не: arrive to home / at home).
- Время прибытия: arrive at 7 p.m. (здесь at — про время, не место).
- Ошибки:
- arrive to the airport → arrive at the airport
- arrive at Paris → arrive in Paris
look for — «искать»
- look for + N / pronoun: I’m looking for my keys.
(Не путать с look at = «смотреть на», look after = «присматривать за».)
- С продолженностью: We were looking for a solution all day.
- Синонимы по регистру: seek (форм.), search for (когда место/объект: search for clues; search без «for», если прямой объект — техника/место: search the room).
- Ошибки:
- look after a job (если «искать работу») → look for a job
- look for on the picture (если «смотреть на») → look at the picture

- arrive in London ≠ arrive at the airport.
